How to Use NBTExplorer to Modify Your Server World Once there, you can download the relevant files for your operating system and start the setup wizard. It’s used for editing any file that uses the NBT file format, which is what Minecraft uses for most of its world data. You can’t just slap the file in a text editor, however, as Minecraft uses a specific formatting known as Named Binary Tag (NBT). To make permanent changes to the lock mode you need to edit the actual game file, the level.dat.
